Bernard Philippi (En)

Bernard Philippi K, who, by the way, was already reading and writing before his 5 years old.
He was born at Charlottenburg, near Berlin, in that time capital city of Prussia, in 1811. That same year the Philippi-Krumwiede family moved to Switzerland, in which place Bernard and his brother Rudolf were onto the J. Heinrich Pestalozzi School Studying Natural Sciences and languages. Continuing after this, his studies in the Technical School of Berlin from 1822 to 1830.
In 1831, due to his many acknowledgements and interests in other cultures, he began a travel thru America, reaching Chile by the first time in January of 1831, at the Valparaiso port. After visiting Chile, he continued his travel to Peru, India, China, and South-Africa; for finally arrives to Hamburg in august of the same year.
Again in Germany, he entered in 1831 to the Nautical School in Danzig thanks
to a scholarship.
After he finalizes his studies in Danzig, he enlisted again at the Loussie sailing ship, this ship was the one in which he made his first trip in 1830.
In this trip he met with Doctor Segueta, with his company he visited and travelled thru the north part of Chile, the south and the highlands in Peru, seeking indigenous antiques for the Museum of Berlin.
Bernardo Philippi, sets his first American residence at Peru, but due to the climatic condition he moved to Chiloé. In this island he had the opportunity of look and investigate the local forms of life, the human, as the animal and the vegetal forms of life; harvesting great numbers of vegetal samples, later this ones will be offered to the Museum of Berlin.
In 1840, in Berlin he presented his works at the Natural Sciences Society of Berlin, receiving many praises and he got a job as “collector of faun and flowers from Chile, for the Museum of Berlin”.
That same year he came back to Chile, for explore the Valdivia Province (in that époque district zone from the Toltén River to the Maullin), and the Llanquihue lake. In this lake he made two expeditions. The first one form Melipulli (Puerto Montt), to the lake and form there to Osorno, And the other one form de Maullin River to the lake. Both in 1842.
In these expeditions he discovered virgin woods but also burned wood zones.
After this expeditions, Philippi was required for (“Toma de posesión del Estrecho de Magallanes”) – taking posesion of the Magallanes strait.
Just on 1848, the chilenean government understood the positive in the great idea of Philippi of “colonize the south of Chile with germans”. The same idea that passed thru the mind of the one last European Emperor, Charles the Fifth of the Holy Roman-German Empire (King Charles the First of Spain, etc.) that also had this desire of colonize the south of Chile all the way to the South Pole with Germanic people.
In August 27th of 1848, the government gave him the possession as “colonizer agent”, with the mission of search people disposed to came to Chile. But there was a little complication: the government just wanted Catholics.
In Germany he was helped by his brother in bring the first group of colonizers in 1849 to Chile.
Bernard Philippi wasn’t able to see his dream (seeing the deep of the Llanquihe Lake colonized by Germanic people) became true, due to the fact that just in 1852 he came back to Chile, required by the government to assume the charge as “Governor of Magallanes”, because the government had already changed. The same Antonio Varas dismissed Bernard Philippi as colonizer agent.
Due to his permanence in Magallanes and by a tragic visit to a “cacique” (indigenous chief) of that zone, “don” Bernard Philippi disappear at the Patagonia.
After a year of his disappearance, the new governor Jorg Schytte seeks for Bernard Philippi and founds some tracks, some Patagonians Indians confessed the assassination of the father of the German Colonization in the south of Chile. His body was never founded.
Among all the great public works of Bernard Philippi, we can mention the colonization of the south zone of Chile, natural discoveries (new species, their properties-capabilities, etc.), a new and precisely cartographical design of the Valdivia Province, of the Lake Llanquihue and part of Chiloé.
Besides he participates taking part in the possession of the Magallanes strait.
